About Sujni Weaving

Sujani is a handwoven quilt from Bharuch, Gujarat which has been in practice for over 175 years. Rafiq Bhai says that the word Sujani is derived from “Sujvu” which means to “conceive” or to “have an idea”.

It is a woven padded double cloth where rectangular pockets are created by means of interchanging the warp and the weft at specific intervals. Cotton fiber is stuffed in these pockets to create ready, handwoven quilts. The craft requires two people to work simultaneously from either side of the loom, alternatively throwing over the shuttles and weaving in perfect co-ordination.

The loom used to weave a Sujani quilt is a frame loom with 8 shafts and two sets of 8 pedals that the two weavers operate simultaneously.

At present, only a single family is left to practice this craft on the traditional loom. The other families who used to practice the craft have moved to other occupations and disbanded their looms, while another family of artisans is practicing Sujani on a modified loom. Rafiq Bhai, his brother Ameen Bhai, his wife Sayra Banu and their daughter Fathima Banu are the last artisans working on the traditional Sujani frame loom.

About Gradation

The collection ‘Rafiq ni Sujani’ aims at expanding the boundaries of what Sujani quilts are traditionally known for by introducing newer colors, patterns, sizes and placements keeping the technique intact.

The idea for this Sujani began with the thought, “What can we do in
Sujani, which doesn’t impact the technique, and can give us
something totally unique?” We then created a colour gradation within a
single pocket. Colours shift within it, and repeat across the pattern to
create an illusion-like effect. Although we were hesitant on whether
Rafiq Bhai would like making this design because of its complexity, he
enjoyed making this so much! Along with Fathima Banu, he was able
to crack this intricate pattern and make it their own with so much
happiness and pride! The little surprise we have for you on this Sujani
will help you identify the bottom of the quilt from the top whenever you
want to wrap yourself in it!
