Rafiq Bhai says that the word Sujani is derived from “Sujvu” which means to “conceive” or to “have an idea”.

It is a woven padded double cloth where rectangular pockets are created by means of interchanging the warp and the weft at specific intervals. Cotton fiber is stuffed in these pockets to create ready, handwoven quilts. The craft requires two people to work simultaneously from either side of the loom, alternatively throwing over the shuttles and weaving in perfect co-ordination.

The loom used to weave a Sujani quilt is a frame loom with 8 shafts and two sets of 8 pedals that the two weavers operate simultaneously.

At present, only a single family is left to practice this craft on the traditional loom. The other families who used to practice the craft have moved to other occupations and disbanded their looms, while another family of artisans is practicing Sujani on a modified loom. Rafiq Bhai, his brother Ameen Bhai, his wife Sayra Banu and their daughter Fathima Banu are the last artisans working on the traditional Sujani frame loom.

About Boxes & stripes

The collection ‘Rafiq ni Sujani’ aims at expanding the boundaries of what Sujani quilts are traditionally known for by introducing newer colors, patterns, sizes and placements keeping the technique intact.

This Sujani looks at the different ways of seeing a colour. On one side
there are solid black boxes, and on the other end, lines run along
them. You can see the black and the white separately, but when they
come together, they form different patterns across the quilt, which is
what makes this Sujani special! Large curves on the surface soften the
layout, while the bright red applique circles add small bursts of colour and
excitement! Our little monkey hanging on one of the curves will help
you identify the head of this Sujani whenever you’d like to use it!

Size

52"*80"

Designed By

Handwoven by Rafiq bhai and his daughter Femida Banu from Bharuch & Applique by Sumi & Jaya from Ahmedabad.

Wash Care

Dry cleaning

Shipping

It will take approximately 25-30 days to ship; from the day payment is received.
